The Face Is America, the Taste Is Canada Dry

Part of Canada Dry's 'The Face Is America, the Taste Is Canada Dry' campaign that ran around 1959-1962, the ad pairs a weathered, plainly American face -- here a fisherman -- with a line that lets one ordinary working portrait stand in for the whole country. The rhetorical move borrows down-home American authenticity to vouch for the soda's flavor, a domestic-credibility pitch for a brand whose name points north. Variants of the campaign appeared in LIFE across those years promoting the ginger ale and fruit-flavored sodas.
